It's natural...apparently...

In Jackie French's Chook Book on the topic of chickens moulting she simply says: "This is natural and unavoidable, if messy."  She's not wrong!!

  1. oh no, they've started already! I always think its such a silly time to moult, you'd think they'd do it over summer when it was warm.... PS I love that chook book!

    1. Yes I can't believe they've gone through all the hot weather we've had in the last three months, and only now have they started to moult. I also can't believe they aren't completely bald, there are just so many feathers in the garden!!

  2. Haha! Yes, my girls always look like they've been having pillow fights in November. Although, when I got turkeys, my perspective shifted. Turkeys look like they've been fighting with the whole mattress! I had feathers drifting and blowing around the yard for weeks!

    1. Glad I've only got 3 chickens then, I can't imagine how messy turkeys must be! Although the girls seem to be doing it one at a time, so the mess is dragged out for much longer than really necessary... What do you do with the feathers? Can they be composted?
